The only thing that confused me a bit about Malik was that in the first couple of chapters it really sounded as if he was like 12 years old, then more like 15, but I think he was supposed to be at least 17.. Karina was a bit more of our standard ‘strong’ female character, but I still enjoyed her. requiring the beating heart of a king. But as attraction flares between them and ancient evils stir, will they be able to see their tasks to the death? The first in an fantasy duology inspired by West African folklore in which a grieving crown princess and a desperate refugee find themselves on a collision course to murder each other despite their growing attraction.
I also loved his relationships with his younger and older sisters. I enjoyed the writing. Overall, I loved the story itself and the plot, and I thought the writing was absolutely gorgeous, specifically with regard to the insights about trans-generational trauma, but the relationship (or lack thereof) between the main characters was lackluster. I really loved this book especially the world and mythology!

The main reason why I was drawn to this book was the fact that it is inspired by West African folklore, of which I don’t think I’ve ever read a book! I enjoyed reading the last few chapters much more than I had the previous ones, and I thought the conclusion was masterfully done, especially with regard to Malik. I definitely expect to see more from the magic in the sequel! Rating: 4 stars. I really like the sound of the world and the magic- that’s definitely what’s drawing me in. Nonetheless, it was definitely a bonus, and while I could do with another read through to get the existing politics and names of various ethnic/regional communities straight, I thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself in this world. Sounds like an all-around wonderful read! Brown.
And I definitely did enjoy that aspect of the book!
They’re also both very driven, with end goals in mind, which makes them much more interesting to read, though both let the other characters lead them at times. I’m a bit bumped that we probably have to wait another year for the sequel! Karina’s character is a bit more conventional, being a princess who doesn’t want to be queen.
Malik’s character is 100% unique in the young adult genre, especially for a male protagonist and love interest in YA fantasy.

Shame the plot dragged a little, but it’s really good it ended up picking up with a great twist.
