With any dystopia there are, of course, antagonists, in this case cannibals, who you are hoping will inject some great menacing characters. It is the not knowing who they are or much about them that gives it an air of mystery and with it fear. Unfortunately, at just under two and a half hours long it also has a lot of talky scenes. It’s fifteen years after World War III and the ensuing nuclear winter is over. This is a Britain but not quite as we know it, undoubtedly and you would believe is post-Brexit, set 15 years after World War III triggered by a nuclear attack on Turkey. How these characters meet and progress is at odds of what we are made to believe about Hobson’s character and his mentality. One boy clings onto life in the desolate countryside of southern Britain, where staying away from other humans has been key to his survival.
Granted an end of the world scenario might not be the best thing to relax to right now. You want to feel that urge to will these characters on and survive but it just isn’t there. Of course, that turns out to be a bad idea as she and The Man (Chris Kaye, Mummy Reborn, The Bad Nun) are planning to steal his stash of supplies. Any film that explores a post-apocalyptic Britain is going to have an element of intrigue but this is not the film to deliver on that. Perhaps the exception being Hobson’s “The Boy” where we witness flashbacks from his childhood including a supermarket looting scene which is particularly relevant nowadays. Others, like the constant bickering between The Man and The Boy just get annoying and should have been trimmed. Edge of Extinction, like Anthropocene, sees the world ending not with grand Road Warrior style battles or hordes of zombies.It’s individuals, small groups and gangs fighting the odds and each other for survival. It is a missed opportunity to really build something in a film with a runtime of two hours and twenty minutes which is nothing short of frustrating.
