I know Ames admires the work of Richard Stark, and clearly, he learned from the master. It's fascinating to compare the screen and book, and how they are different, yet totally respectful of Ames' vision. Shit goes sideways.
Quickly your sympathies for Joe is heightened and from the beginning you are rooting for him, your empathy well and truly put into overdrive as the mental and physical damage he has experienced is put sharply into focus, and there is a real strength to Ames’ writing in passages where Joe indulges in some critical self-examination of his own psyche. A gripping story which I read in a couple of hours - however, was so disappiinted in the ending which left one up in the air - was there a further book which covered the ending of what happened. Originally published in 2013 Ames’s noir thriller has come to prominence in the last two years after the republished Pushkin Vertigo edition, and more recently, the film tie-in version. The ending is a bit unsatisfying, coming quickly and seeming rushed. I can't help but wonder if Joe is saving these girls to try and save himself. Only 97 pages, there is not a wasted word or phrase in this book. There is not even one unnecessary phrase in this tightly-plotted and structured short novel and i can recommend it to everyone who is tolerant to descriptions of violent acts and not to the faint-hearted. its just a whole bunch of ways to explain how and why the movie was the was it was.
