But I think at the midpoint of our season, they’ll be in a place where you wouldn’t have expected them to be after watching the first episode. A story about Kate overeating because she's stressed is not.

I think it’s one of those things that is very easy for people who haven’t really been touched by body image issues to say, “I wish you had a story about weight different than what you do.” They don’t quite get it is my personal opinion. We don’t want the show to become an “issue of the week” show but because it’s real life, we do explore a lot of different things. This Is Us was originally conceived as a film involving octuplets.
The first episode holds a giant piece of the puzzle that I think will feed the beast of the appetite of people wanting to know what happens without giving every single answer. Most of their scenes center on a visit from a woman trained in raising children who are blind, getting the parents (and for some reason, Rebecca, Miguel, Madison and Kevin) to consider issues like not changing the furniture layout so that Baby Jack can learn it. But even a couple so progressive and evolved can struggle with their daughter's sexuality.
But we all do. Beth admits she's pushing her own anxiety onto Tess, Randall relents about the bus, and Annie (Faithe Herman) actually shows some emotion. Finally with season 3 taping, I ordered season 1 and 2 to watch to 'catch up'.

How do you balance tear-jerking twists with that uplifting message?
How has people’s response to the series changed how you write, if at all? Compared to last week's episode, full of new characters who show storytelling promise, returning to the Pearsons was a bit of a letdown. As someone who lived with a family of people and has a writer’s room that’s full of people who have battled weight and body image issues, it is a driving force for a lot of people. It seems like Kevin is heading for a meeting about the new movie in Chicago, but instead he flies to Pennsylvania and shows up at Nicky's door with his plant.
A story about Kate and Toby learning to raise a vision-impaired child without pushing their anxieties on him is interesting. To me, it is so bizarre that that even got any kind of traction, this idea that Kate’s story is only about her weight.
I try not to read too much because I don’t want to change what we’re doing.
Toby goes so far as to tell Rebecca that he thinks Kate is overeating to deal with the stress.
The actors have helped him on that front: Sterling K. Brown won an Emmy last week for his role as Randall Pearson.
Rebecca and Kate push him to take a job on another film in Chicago to avoid interrupting his routine. And Rebecca and Jack are at this crossroads in their marriage. I’m not setting out to necessarily do that, but I guess it’s something that’s been in my mind in the past decade. We want to get it right.
He made a beautiful speech to the crew about sharing the award with everybody, and everyone went home with a selfie with Sterling holding the Emmy. They are starting points for where we started the series. We feel like we have this microphone right now, and we want to make sure that we use it responsibly.
